Iberdrola has signed a twenty-year power-purchase agreement with Google for 1.4 gigawatts of Iberian solar capacity, the largest single corporate renewable contract ever signed on the peninsula.

The deal includes new plants in Extremadura and Andalusia and a portion of existing capacity. Google says the agreement will cover roughly 40 per cent of the projected electricity demand of its forthcoming Madrid hyperscale region.

Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica welcomed the contract, which it said would help integrate two gigawatts of curtailed midday solar generation.
